On July 19, 2023 from 3 PM to 5 PM, Aveanna Health Care and the SALT (Senior Adults Living Triumphantly) program in Demopolis, AL will be hosting a “Senior Citizens Prom” at Demopolis First United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Participants will come from area Nutrition Centers, Nursing Homes, Assisted Living facilities, Theo Ratliff Activity Centers, area churches Senior Groups, and the SALT program.

The SALT program opened its volunteered-based program five years ago as a dementia respite program, and all activities are designed to give participants a sense of success, joy, and purpose. For example, the program works diligently in breaking the stigma of dementia by incorporating area youth and high school clubs in the weekly program.  They have also sponsored a “WE LOVE OUR SENIORS” week in which the Mayor designated one week out of the year to acknowledge local senior citizens and their value to the community. Businesses provided special discounts, free food and services, donated items to be given out, and youth who pumped gas for seniors at area service stations.

This, along with community service projects, on-going training, virtual dementia tours, and expert speakers are slowly helping the public gain a better understanding of dementia and its impact on family and community. The “Senior Citizen Prom” is another unique way to create special memories for all who are involved.
