The Jim and Elmore Inscoe Legacy of Love

Jim Inscoe pursued the love of his life, a tall beauty by the name of Elmore Bartlett, for two and half years before he proposed to her in a true Respite style. This was Easter weekend 1964, and he’d dressed as a six-foot bunny carrying a basket that contained a golden egg. When she opened the golden egg, she discovered an engagement ring fashioned from her mother’s ring.

Jim and Elmore were married in Montgomery on August 14, 1965, and would build a family that included daughters Elmore and Allison and son Turner.

The Inscoes’ love story took a new turn in 2014 when Elmore was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As her devoted care partner, Jim has walked beside her every step of the way, and during this time, they and their family developed a deep appreciation for the support they found in the Respite Ministry at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery.

The Inscoes have since become tireless champions of the Respite for All movement and the benefits it has given their family. In fact, a few years back, they were the champions for opening a new location in Atlanta.

Selecting a Care Partner to Honor Their Love Story

To honor their love story, each year, the Respite for All Foundation will recognize a care partner from one of RFA’s extended network of communities that best honors the legacy of love and commitment that Jim has shown his wife, Elmore. This annual recognition, the Inscoe Legacy of Love, will represent the millions of care partners that give their time and attention so unselfishly to give their person quality of life while living with dementia.

The recognition will open on April 1, 2025, for Respite for All directors to nominate a care partner from your community by submitting an essay of around 500 words that describes the family’s story and commitment to one another.

Essays must be submitted to RFA by July 15, 2025, by emailing minnie@respiteforall.org.

The selected care partner will receive a “Legacy of Love” gift of $1000 to hopefully use for self-care and respite, and the director of the selected community will also be awarded $500 from Respite for All. The winning story will be shared at RFA’s Annual Brain Science Luncheon in October.
