Brain Science Luncheon Packs House

On October 9, nearly 1000 guests attended Respite for All’s fourth annual Brain Science Luncheon, which featured Lisa Genova, #1 International and New York Times bestselling Author and Neuroscientist.

As we expanded our sponsorships this year, our attendance grew by several hundred, moving us to a larger space at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery. The inaugural Inscoe Legacy of Love recipient, care partner Amy Scalise, was also announced during the event.

Genova is the New York Times bestselling author of the novels Still Alice, Left Neglected, Love Anthony, Inside the O’Briens, and Every Note Played. Still Alice was adapted into a film starring Julianne Moore, who won the 2015 Best Actress Oscar for her role as Alice Howland. She is also the author of the nonfiction book, Remember: The Science of Memory and the Art of Forgetting, another New York Times bestseller, which she drew from for a talk that covered:

  • Understanding the language of memory and how it functions
  • Why some memories last a few seconds – and others last a lifetime.
  • The difference between normal forgetting and Alzheimer’s-type forgetting.
  • How memory is profoundly impacted by meaning, emotion, sleep, stress, and context.
  • How to improve your ability to remember and feel less rattled when you inevitably forget.

Genova’s first TED talk, “What You Can Do To Prevent Alzheimer’s” has been viewed over eight million times.
