Find Respite Care in Washington

In 2022, 4.0% of individuals aged 65 and older reported having been diagnosed with dementia-related illnesses. Many churches in Washington have the resources and the heart to help but may wonder how to start. By utilizing available space during the week and engaging serviced-minded volunteers, congregations can become vital support systems for families living with dementia.

The Respite For All Foundation (RFA) offers a reliable model that churches and senior organizations can implement to create a vibrant weekday respite program. More than 50 other organizations have already followed this model to provide support and care to families in their communities. By implementing RFA’s non-medical, volunteer-based model of care, you will be seizing a valuable opportunity to create significant and lasting change in the way your community supports dementia care.

A Ministry Model That Works

In 2012, Daphne Johnston launched a Respite Ministry at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, that relied on scores of eager volunteers to help her run the program while the church provided free space to operate during the week. The program rapidly expanded due to its holistic approach and volunteer support. By 2019, Daphne and Warren Barrow founded the RFA Foundation to extend this model nationwide. Recognized for its innovative contributions, RFA has inspired over 50 programs across the U.S., serving thousands impacted by dementia.

The Respite for All Foundation (RFA) is a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with dementia by implementing a social, volunteer-driven respite care model. RFA shows faith communities and senior service organizations how to take advantage of available spaces and volunteers, enabling more and more local organizations to offer companionship and evidence-based activities, benefiting both individuals living with dementia and their care partners.

Open to all, regardless of faith, these programs operate one to four days a week without medical staff. RFA provides training to nurture new volunteer communities and has successfully initiated 50 programs nationwide, supporting over thousands of individuals with dementia and their care partners.
